Nepal is a paradise for bird lovers with over 848 species (almost 8% of the world) of birds, and among them almost 500 hundred species are found in Kathmandu Valley alone. The most popular bird watching spots in Nepal are Chitwan National Park, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Kathmandu valley, Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun and so on. Get your binoculars and go ahead to get a rewarding experience.

Bird Watching in Chitwan National Park:  

Chitwan National Park is famous for the bird watching as well as other wildlife activities. This park is alive during summer with the arrival of migrant birds like, paradise flycatchers, parakeets and indian pitta and winter birds including waterfowl, Brahminy ducks, pintails, bar-headed geese, cormorants. This is a place where migratory birds come from as far as Siberia during winter. Besides that other bird species are woodpeckers, hornbills, peacocks, peahens, floricans and redheaded trogons. Therefore, this is a birdwatcher's paradise.

Bird Watching in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve:

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has made its image as a bird watcher's paradise. The Reserve has been recognized as a wetland since 1987 and the vegetations of here are mainly grassland with patches of scrub and deciduous forests. The reserve has recorded 450 species of birds among them some are all the way from Siberia during the winter. There is more than 20 species of ducks, herons, storks, egrets, Black Ibis those are seen on the river banks. Other bird species are Honey kites, Ospreys; Black headed Orioles, Peregrine Falcon, Partridges and Storks.

Bird Watching in Kathmandu Valley   

Kathmandu valley and its surrounding has 500 different species of birds found in Nepal. The surrounding hills offer a varied ecology ranging from primary and secondary forests to rhododendrons, oak and pine forests. In addition, the wetlands and open fields inside the valley make up a diverse habitat for many species of birds. The Kathmandu valley has four main bird watching areas that are Bagmati and Manohara Rivers bank, Chovar gorge and Godavari.

Bird Watching in Phulchowki Hill:   

Phulchowki is another perfect site for bird watching; with a Red- headed Trogon (a very rare bird sighted there in April 2000).It is situated at 2760 m above sea level and 18 km south east of Kathmandu valley. The hillside is covered with forest featuring outstanding flora as well as diverse birds. About 90 species of the birds have been recorded in this area including the Endemic spring Babbler, Cutia, Mountain Hawk eagle, Rufous bellied pied woodpeckers and the Black- throated  parrotbill etc.

Bird Watching in Shivapuri Watershed:   

Situated 12 km to the North of Kathmandu, it is another ideal site for bird watching. Shivapuri can be reached either from Sundarijal or Budhanilkantha. Some of the birds we can find in this area are Laughing thrush, crested serpent eagle; little pied Fly Catcher, Ruby- throats and Bablers. Nagarjuna which is situated at the height of 2105 m. is also a renowned place for bird enthusiasts, where they can find Pheasants, magpies, kalij, Sunbirds and Ruby-throats.

Bird Watching in Pokhara Valley   

Phewa Tal and Begnas Tal and their surroundings areas are highly recommended for bird watching in Pokhara valley. The birds found in these areas are Egrets, Herons, Pipits, and Buntings, Gulls, Terns, Ducks, and Falcons etc.

 

Bird Watching Tour Itinerary

Day 01:  Godavari - Phulchoki Hill – Kathmandu:
After breakfast, leave with Pack Lunch and hike up the Phulchoki Hill. About 90 species birds have been recorded in this area including the endemic spring babbler, Curia, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Rufous Bellied Pied Woodpeckers and the Black-throated Parrot bill etc. Return to Kathmandu in the evening.    

Day 02: Nagarjuna Forest:
After breakfast drive to Nagajuna forest and start the hiking up to top of the hill. Birds can be found here are pheasants, magpies, sunbirds and ruby throats. Return to Kathmandu after the tour.

Day 03: Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve:
Drive to Sundarijal or Budhanilkantha for the tour. Birds can be found in the Shivapuri area are Laughing Thrush, Crested Serpent Eagle, little Pied Fly Catchers, Rupy-throats and Babblers etc. Return to Kathmandu in the evening or Chisapani for overnight stay to enjoy the wonderful Mountain View
